A Local’s Guide

A Night Out in Minocqua

The boats come in, the lake goes to glass, and the island city keeps a different set of hours. Here’s how to spend an evening in downtown Minocqua, from the people pouring at the end of it.

Begin at the water

Minocqua earns its sunsets. Before dinner, walk down to Torpy Park on the edge of Lake Minocqua or the railroad trestle along the Bearskin Trail and watch the light go long over the water. In summer the town hums until dusk; in the shoulder seasons you may have the shoreline nearly to yourself, which is its own kind of luxury.

Dinner on the island

Downtown Minocqua sits on what’s essentially an island, and most of an evening happens within a few walkable blocks. For dinner, take your pick: The Knotty Barrel for a throwback to the classic supper club days, The Boathouse for dinner with lake views and a baby grand upstairs, The Thirsty Whale for Northwoods fare built right out over the water, Otto’s Beer & Brat Garden for Sheboygan brats and a beer list eighty deep, or the Minocqua Yacht Club if you want rooftop seating and the parade of boats below. None of them are ours; all of them are good neighbors, and any of them sets up the rest of the night properly.

The nightcap: wine & cocktails until 11

After dinner, the island quiets. That’s where we come in. The Sapphire Lounge is tucked within a hidden garden at 414 Oneida St., pouring signature and classic cocktails, wines by the glass and bottle, local beer, and a full slate of zero-proof and THC options for whoever’s driving the boat home. Some nights there’s live music; every night there’s somewhere soft to land. We pour until 11, Wednesday through Saturday.

Before you turn in

The Northwoods has almost no light pollution. On a clear night, the walk back to wherever you’re staying comes with a sky most cities have forgotten. Look up. That’s the last pour of the evening, and it’s on the house.
